What’s Up Provo!

Today is “International Left Hander’s Day”, so message a left handed person you know and let them know you are thinking about them today.

Just in case you are wondering, there is no such thing as “Right Hander’s Day”.

Here are the top events of the day:

Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

-Post on the Open City Hall forum.
- Attend the public hearing on August 13th, 6pm, at City Hall or by Zoom. Information to join by Zoom will be published on August 8th. (We have not been able to find the Zoom link yet…)

Also, here are some of the details from the Provo City website that interested us:

How much will property tax go up (if approved)?
“The average homeowner would pay an extra $1 per month, approximately. The exact impact on your property tax will depend on the assessed value of your property. For example, if your home is valued at $482,000, you would pay an extra $11.93 per year. If your business is valued at $482,000, you would pay an extra $21.69 per year.”

What will happen if it is not approved?
“If the tax increase is not approved, the library will cut $482,000 from its budget. This includes cutting some collections, reducing staff and hours, and possibly shutting down some nontraditional services like the attic, creative lab, and outreach programs.”

Jerry Seinfeld is best known as a comedian and actor. But he is also left handed (today is left hander’s day). And according to some his very first joke was about being left-handed:

“So, I am left-handed...

Left-handed people do not like that the word left is so often associated with negative things.

Left feet. Left-handed compliment.

‘What are we having for dinner? Leftovers.

’You go to a party there is nobody there. ‘Where did everybody go?’ ‘They left!'”

Jerry Seinfeld is also known for his practice called “Don’t Break The Chain”.

Productivity experts everywhere now site Jerry Seinfeld when teaching this technique for getting stuff done and overcoming procrastination. Read more about it here.

Words To Remember

Happy Birthday Annie Oakley! If you don’t know Annie Oakley, in the late 1800s, she was a world famous marksmen and entertainer. She did things like shoot a cigar out of her husbands mouth on stage during the Buffalo Bill Wild West shows.

“Aim at a high mark and you will hit it. No, not the first time, not the second time and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting for only practice will make you perfect. Finally you'll hit the bull's-eye of success.”

Annie Oakley

Have a great day Provo!
