What’s Up Provo!

Happy National Relaxation Day…😎👌

Apparently relaxation day was thought up in 1985 by a nine-year old kid named Sean Moelle. Good job Sean.

Here’s a quick look at the top events happening today:

Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

Ideas, Inspiration

Listen

“During the darkest hours of the Civil War, Lincoln wrote to an old friend in Springfield, Illinois, asking him to come to Washington. Lincoln said he had some problems he wanted to discuss with him.

The old neighbor called at the White House, and Lincoln talked to him for hours about the advisability of issuing a proclamation freeing the slaves. Lincoln went over all the arguments for and against such a move, and then read letters and newspaper articles, some denouncing him for not freeing the slaves and others denouncing him for fear he was going to free them.

After talking for hours, Lincoln shook hands with his old neighbor, said good night, and sent him back to Illinois without even asking for his opinion. Lincoln had done all the talking himself. That seemed to clarify his mind. “He seemed to feel easier after that talk,” the old friend said.

Lincoln hadn’t wanted advice. He had wanted merely a friendly, sympathetic listener to whom he could unburden himself.

That’s what we all want when we are in trouble. That is frequently all the irritated customer wants, and the dissatisfied employee or the hurt friend.”

Update

Provo City Votes to Increase Tax and Fund the Library

The Provo City Library is expecting to have a major funding shortfall. So the city council met on Tuesday to decide whether to increase property taxes to cover the shortfall.

The city council voted 6-1 in favor of the tax increase.

The increase will end up costing an extra $1 a month in property tax (for the average home).

From KSL NEWS:

“More emails than I’ve ever received in six and a half years on any issue,” Handley said, “and I’ve never seen such a disproportionate vote in favor of one thing.”

Besides a much smaller tax hike that passed last year, Handley said the library has had to operate on essentially a flat budget – without meaningful increases to account for inflation – since it opened in the old Brigham Young Academy building in 2001.

“Do I hope to find more ways to be frugal, yeah, always,” said Gordon. “But at some point, inflation hits everybody.”

Words To Remember
