What’s Up Provo!🤙

It’s World Photography Day but it also happens to be National Potato Day as well! 📸🥔 Great way to start the week.

Here is what’s happening today:

Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

Today is Orville Wright birthday!✈️ Here’s a story of his and his brother’s success.

Start with the right “why”

"In the early 1900s, Samuel Pierpont Langley was the leading figure in the powered flight race. He had every advantage, generous funding from the U.S. War Department, a team of top-notch engineers, and media attention.

So why did he fail? One reason…his motivation was rooted in personal gain.

Langley’s goal was not just to innovate but to achieve wealth and fame. (When the Wright brothers succeeded, Langley simply quit, showing his primary focus was not truly on solving the problem.)

In stark contrast, Orville and Wilbur Wright—two unknown bicycle shop owners from Dayton, Ohio—had no funding, no media following, and no expert team. What they did have was a compelling vision. They were driven by a deep belief that mastering flight would change the world for the better. Their purpose wasn’t wealth or recognition; it was to contribute something meaningful. This vision fueled their persistence through countless failures.

The Wright brothers' success underscores a critical lesson: intrinsic motivation and a shared vision can outpace even the most well-funded and skilled teams, and when individual gain takes precedence, progress can suffer.

It’s not just about resources or talent—it’s about vision, teamwork, and the willingness to struggle together for a shared goal."

-Based on a speech from Simon Sinek (Start With Why)

Words To Remember

"If we had been interested in invention with the idea of profit we most assuredly would have tried something in which the chances for success were brighter. You see, we did not expect in the beginning to go beyond gliding."

"Even later we didn't suppose the aeroplane could ever be practical outside the realm of sport. It was the sport of the thing that appealed to Will and me. The question was not of money from flying but how we could get money enough to keep on entertaining ourselves with it."

Orville Wright
