What’s Up Provo!

Today in the ‘lympics: Men’s 400m final (watch for Quincy Hall), the men’s 3000m steeplechase (we’re rooting for Kenneth)…

There’s also the Race Walk Mixed Relay final.🚶 Not sure what to think about this one.

Watching people try their hardest to win is satisfying. Watching people artificially restrict themselves while competing sounds frustrating. Like watching sprinting but the sprinters aren’t allowed to bend their knees. Or the hurdles but your hands have to be in your pockets.

To be fair there is probably a lot more to race walking than we realize. And at the end of the day someone is still getting a gold medal!🥇

We may not have the opportunity to win an olympic gold medal today but we do have a lot great things going on. Let’s get into it!

What’s Happening

Here’s a quick overview of top events coming up:

Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

Fryer Park @ 6:30pm

This is an event put on by the City of Lindon for their Lindon Days celebration. (So when you try and blend in, use your best Lindon accent.)

The event is being held at Fryer Park and it starts at 6:30pm. According to their website: “We will have the fish ready and the park full of water ready for fishing! Come ready to get wet with your fishing nets and buckets and try to take home a WHOPPER!

From the Provo City Library: "Learn the rules of home preservation (canning). See how easy it is to preserve fruits and make jam and jelly. Discover how to preserve tomato-based salsas and sauces. Discover where safe preservation recipes can be found."

The class will be held in Room 201 at the Provo Library and will go from 7pm until 8:30pm.

Tip for the day

It’s national Simplify Your Life week. One way to simplify your life is by simply being more effective and getting things off your to do list quickly.

To get stuff off your to-do list more effectively it could help to understand Parkinson’s Law which is "Work expands to fill the available time".

Use Parkinson’s Law to your advantage by first identifying some things you need to do. (Some tasks work better than others when it comes to Parkinson’s law such as cleaning, getting through your emails, researching something online, even getting ready for the day.)

Then figure out a time it might take to accomplish that task, and cut the time in half.

Set your timer to that amount and race to accomplish the task(s). Most every time if you follow this technique you will accomplish your tasks quicker. If you have tasks that have lived on your to-do list for a while it will feel great to finally get those checked off.

UPDATE: USA Wins GOLD in Major Upset

Jacob Ingebrigtsen (Norway) and Josh Kerr (Great Britian) were favorites to win the men’s 1500m race in Paris. But Cole Hocker of the U.S. shocked the world in what is being called one of the biggest upsets in Olympic running history. We won’t give away exactly how the race went, better just to see it: Watch the race

“I just felt like I was getting carried by the stadium and God. My body just kind of did it for me. My mind was all there and I saw that finish line.

“Winning gold was my goal this entire year. I wrote that down and I repeated it to myself even if I didn’t believe it. My performances showed me that I was capable of running 3:27, whatever it took. I knew I was a medal contender, and I knew that if I get it right, it would be a gold medal. I’ve been saying that.”
