Back to School Luau, The Princess Bride, Work like a dog day (in your underwear?)
Whatâs Up Provo!
First thing we need to know about today is that it is underwear day, and also work like a dog day.đ đŠ˛đŞ
That's a weird combo. But if you're going to work hard, might as well be comfortable.
Also, this is the last week before school starts again. It is amazing how quickly the summer has gone by. We hope we can help you make it a great last week, create some memories, and send the kids off to school on a great note.
Whatâs Happening
Hereâs a quick overview of todayâs top events:
Onoâs Malasadas
OUR STORY
While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company âOnoâs Malasadas.â
OUR NAME
The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. âOnoâ in Hawaiian means âdelicious,â while in Portuguese, âMalasadasâ translates to âbad doughâ â a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.
đĽ Scera Summer Matinee
The last day for the Scera Summer Matinee series, which has been going since may, ends Aug 8th. This week the Scera is Migration (PG)đŚ at 10:30am and 1pm, and Flipped (PG) at 10am.
đ Early Literacy Workshop
Bring your 2 to 3 year olds to the Provo Library for the Early Literacy Workshop. Participate in activities to help prepare your child for reading. Register here.
𼞠Hiking
Get out of the city entirely and explore the mountains. By this time of year the trails are all clear, and now the air is mostly clear too because of the storms that rolled through. While you are out there might as well look for the $25,000 two guys buried somewhere along the trails earlier this summer. Utah Treasure Hunt 2024
đââď¸ Olympics
Some of our beloved local athletes are competing in possibly the biggest races/competitions of their lives today! Whittni Orton from BYU is racing in the 5000m final this afternoon (1:10pm MDT), and James Corrigan and Kenneth Rooks, both from BYU (I guess they are calling BYU Steeplechase U), are competing in two different heats to make it to the finals for the Menâs 3000m Steeplechase.
Back to School Luauđ

Interactive Family Movie - The Princess Brideđ¸
Provo City Library @ 6:30pm
Everyone loves the Princess Bride, it really has it all. Love, revenge, adventure, humor. Thereâs nothing better. Except for a nice M.L.T. A mutton, lettuce, and tomato sandwich when the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe. Theyâre so perky.đĽŞ
(If the last half of that paragraph was confusing to you then you really need to go and see the movie.)
Here are some more details for the library: We'll have props and treats so you can act along "as you wish"!
đž Springville Sunset Farmerâs Market
Get outside and enjoy the sunset while supporting our local farmers and artisans at the Springville Sunset Farmerâs Market. Starts at 5pm, and it located on 110 S Main St. in Springville.
Quick Tip
Itâs national Simplify Your Life week. One cause of clutter in our lives are constant notifications. Research shows that switching attention between the real world and your phone all day long is cluttering our minds and making us âchronically distractedâ.
A tip from author Cal Newport (weâve been reading his book Deep Work recently) is to decide in advance what times you will check your phone/email. Maybe thatâs only a few times a day, or once an hour, whatever it is do your best to stick to your plan. If you absolutely must check something earlier, Cal suggests to at least wait 5 minutes, didnât give in right away so you donât reinforce any impulsive habits.
You may feel a little anxious at first, but over time you will see the benefits. Donât let notifications control you.

Jimmer Update:
Team USA (3Ă3 Mens Basketball) was knocked out of the tournament by the Netherlands with Jimmer injured on the sideline. He âtore two different ligaments completelyâ in his adductor.
âThis is devastating for me as I have put two years into qualifying for the Olympics with this group who are my brothers,â Fredette wrote on Instagram as part of the post.
âIn that time we went from a no name team to the number 1 team in the world this year- and did things that no American team has ever done. I also became the #1 ranked player in the world on the same day i was injured. Pretty crazy coincidence. But we were fully prepared and excited to make a medal run here in Paris.â
