What's Up Provo!

For those with kids in school, we hope the first day went well.

And for those of you who used SparkNotes as a student, think of us as SparkNotes for everything happening in Provo.

Here are the top events today:

Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

Taxation Public Hearing 💰

Provo City Hall @ 6pm on August 14th

The Provo Library needs additional funding and so tonight the city council is meeting to discuss whether or not we should increase property taxes to cover the shortfall.

If you want to share your opinions about this, this is Provo City suggests you do one of the following:
-Email [email protected].
-Post on the Open City Hall forum.
- Attend the public hearing on August 13th, 6pm, at City Hall or by Zoom. Information to join by Zoom will be published on August 8th. (We have not been able to find the Zoom link yet…)

Also, here are some of the details from the Provo City website that interested us:

How much will property tax go up (if approved)?
“The average homeowner would pay an extra $1 per month, approximately. The exact impact on your property tax will depend on the assessed value of your property. For example, if your home is valued at $482,000, you would pay an extra $11.93 per year. If your business is valued at $482,000, you would pay an extra $21.69 per year.”

What will happen if it is not approved?
“If the tax increase is not approved, the library will cut $482,000 from its budget. This includes cutting some collections, reducing staff and hours, and possibly shutting down some nontraditional services like the attic, creative lab, and outreach programs.”

🌼 Utah Flower Market
Roses are red, violets are blue, come to The Flower Market this afternoon. The flower vendors and food trucks will be at Grove Station (273 S 2000 W Pleasant Grove) from 11am to 1:30pm.

🍅 Sunset Farmers Market
It looks like it is going to be great weather for a walk through a Farmers Market. So go to 300 East Center Street in Orem and peruse the shops from 5pm to 9pm.

Yoga and Piano Lab at the Library 🧘‍♂️🎹

Piano lab starts @ 9am, Yoga starts @ 5pm

These are two different events, both happening at the library. The Piano Lab will be open from 9am to 9pm. The library will also be having an all-abilities yoga class. The class will start at 5:00pm and will go for about a half hour. (Bring your own mat and please register online.)

Quick Story

Steve Martin was born on Aug 14th, 1945 (79 years ago).

Steve Martin has had a long and successful career as a comedian, actor, writer, producer, and musician. He has received five Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award and an Honorary Academy Award, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and in 2004 was ranked by Comedy Central as the sixth greatest stand-up comic of all-time.

It seems like Steve Martin has been famous forever, but in reality he was not an overnight success. He spent years performing in empty rooms, getting booed and heckled. Professional critics often gave him poor reviews. Even his own father disapproved and was 'a little embarrassed' by Steve.

But Steve kept at it and after fourteen years he finally found success.

Martin explains that being good, counterintuitively, is harder than being great: “Every entertainer has a night when everything is clicking,” (when they are “great”). “These nights are accidental and statistical: Like lucky cards in poker, you can count on them occurring over time. What was hard was to be good, consistently good, night after night, no matter what the abominable circumstances.”

Happy Birthday Steve!

Words To Remember

We’ll leave a quote from someone else whose birthday is today, Annie Oakley.

(If you don’t know Annie Oakley she was a world famous marksmen and entertainer in the late 1800s and early 1900s. She was a part of the famous Buffalo Bill Wild West shows. One of her acts involved shooting a cigar out of her husband’s mouth on stage.)

“Aim at a high mark and you will hit it. No, not the first time, not the second time and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting for only practice will make you perfect. Finally you'll hit the bull's-eye of success.”

Annie Oakley

Aim high Provo!
