School Nights, Markets, Nose Competitions 🏫🥬🐽

Library nose naming competition, Library budget shortfall, Farmer's Markets, School open houses - Aug 12

What’s Up Provo!

The Provo City Library is doing a “Whose Nose” competition today. The Olympics are over but the competitions continue! 💪

Here are the top events happenings this week:

Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

Taxation Public Hearing 💰

Provo City Hall @ 6pm on August 14th

If you want to share your opinions about this, this is Provo City suggests you do one of the following:
-Email [email protected].
-Post on the Open City Hall forum.
- Attend the public hearing on August 13th, 6pm, at City Hall or by Zoom. Information to join by Zoom will be published on August 8th. (We have not been able to find the Zoom link yet…)

Also, here are some of the details from the Provo City website that interested us:

How much will property tax go up (if approved)?
“The average homeowner would pay an extra $1 per month, approximately. The exact impact on your property tax will depend on the assessed value of your property. For example, if your home is valued at $482,000, you would pay an extra $11.93 per year. If your business is valued at $482,000, you would pay an extra $21.69 per year.”

What will happen if it is not approved?
“If the tax increase is not approved, the library will cut $482,000 from its budget. This includes cutting some collections, reducing staff and hours, and possibly shutting down some nontraditional services like the attic, creative lab, and outreach programs.”

Tips of the day 💡

Two tips that would have been good to know at the beginning of summer:

Keep fruit flies away 🦟

A small bowl of vinegar + soap will lure and kill any fruit flies that have been bothering you. Also, keep your drains clean. 🚰 Fruit flies often breed in drains.

Keep wasps away 🐝

TL;DR: Wasps love pretty much every food except cucumbers. They also don’t like citronella-infused candles. Strangely specific but good to know.

Also, the first wasp to arrive at the party is a scout and will recruit others so catch it before it tells the others if you can. Avoid killing it because it will release a chemical signal which will bring other wasps.
