Chicken in the Kitchen 🍗

It’s Korean American Day, so we have to talk about Chicken in the Kitchen again! Chicken in the Kitchen, aka CIK, is tucked away in the corner of the Rancho Market parking lot, truly “Utah’s hidden gem” (quote taken from a Google review, but we agree).

It is owned by a Korean family, who now calls Provo their home—so you know they’re going to serve real Korean flavors.

Here are some of their other reviews: “majestic,” “prepare to have your culinary life changed,” “I've had Korean chicken all over the world. This is one of the best out there.”

The fried chicken wings are probably their most popular item, and they come with one of their amazing sauces:
🔴 Sweet red
🔥 Angry red (spicy)
🥇 Golden soy
😡 Angry soy (spicy)
🧅 Creamy onion

Other check out their deluxe chicken sandwich, crispy chicken salad (topped with Crispy Bites), and bulgogi fries. 맛있다!

Flood Maps being updated in Provo (flood insurance impact) 🌊

FEMA is updating its flood maps for the Provo River and Utah Lake for the first time since the 1980s. Big changes could impact some Provo residents, especially west of Geneva Road, where the old levees apparently no longer meet federal standards. The main impact of this, from what we understand, is increased flood insurance rates for some of us. Check out the new maps and appeal them if needed before March 18, 2025. Article

Fans of wontons and Kung Pao Chicken will be happy to hear that Lucky 5, a Chinese restaurant in Spanish Fork, is open again! There was a fire in the restaurant but because of the quick actions of the Spanish Fork fire department, the damage was minimal. Article | Menu

Silicon Slopes at UVU 🖥️

The dates for Silicon Slopes were updated to January 14th - 17th, not Jan 13th as it says here.

This will mark the first time that Silicon Slopes will be held at a college campus. (Silicon Slopes is by far Utah’s biggest tech event, and probably Utah’s biggest business event in general.)

Another bold move they are making this year is that it will be FREE and open to the public! There is a VIP ticket you can purchase that gives you extra access to things, but great to hear that there is a free option!

The first half of Silicon Slopes will be held at UVU, as we’ve mentioned, and the last two days will be in Salt Lake at the Salt Palace. (You can see the agenda for each day by going to their website, see the link we included below).

So business owners and business professionals—don’t miss out on this one! Tons of great speakers, so many great people to meet (usually about 20,000 attendees every year!), and in general it’s just a fun and exciting event.

Kinda Useful Trivia 🤓

Lots of theatre and performance-related events and reminders today, so we have a theater/theatre related trivia question today.

Some background info: There is a theater in Utah that is not only the longest running theater in Utah, but it might be the oldest running cinematic theaters in the country! (Also according to wikipedia it had (has?) an underground tunnel that was used to smuggle alcohol during the American prohibition…)

Question: In what city is this theater located?

Hint: The name of the theater is the Casino Star 🎰⭐️

Here’s a somewhat recent photo of it:

See the answer at the bottom of this email.

Reminders and Notices ⚠️

Provo City Council voting tomorrow to make changes to the Noise Ordinance ⚖️

The City Council will be voting about a few proposed changes to the Noise Ordinance tomorrow. So go to opencityhall.provo.org or email [email protected] to make sure your voice is heard. Here is what they will be voting on:

🔊 Standardizing noise limits based on time of day/zone.
🔊 Giving an exemption to official stadium (athletic) competitions, regardless of time. This means that non-athletic events (that exceed the noise limit after 10pm) will require a permit.
🔊 More liability for people who are repeat noise violators.

📕 Read Out-Loud Together Bookclub
The book club is meeting this Saturday to talk about the introduction of the The Red Deal, written by The Red Nation. This is a read out-loud together book club, so no homework! (Also it will be at North Park so might be good to bundle up.)

Limited spots are still available for most classes, including Action Tots, Skater Tots, Beginner Skateboarding, and even Adult Skateboarding (it’s never too late to teach an old dog…how to skateboard). We love their focus on mental skills training. More info

Trivia Answer ✏️

The longest running theater in Utah (and maybe the longest running theater in the country) was established by Sims Duggins. He used the money he had earned from a saloon he owned in Provo, and in 1913 he went to GUNNISON and built the now famous theater, the Casino Star 🎰⭐️!

Answer: Gunnison, Utah

Some other facts about the theater: As you might guess, based on the rumors of it having a tunnel for smuggling alcohol, the Casino Star has a scandalous past. A murder might have taken place in it. And some say it is haunted. But what old theater isn’t…
