What’s Up Provo! Happy Columbus Day! ⛵️ Also happy Native American Day, Real Sugar Day, and Be Bald and Free Day! 🧑‍🦲

A few highlights from today’s newsletter:

Before we get into everything happening this week, just a few items of business:

1️⃣ There are lots of cool fall/halloween venues around the valley (Cornbelly's et all) and we want you guys to know about them. So we're sending you an "Ultimate Guide to Fall Activities". 🍁

(We thought about fitting the writeup into today's email, but there's just too much. So, anyway, look out for that if you're interested, it will be hitting your inbox tomorrow morning.)

2️⃣ If you know of any local businesses that started up in 2024 please let us know about them. Starting a new business is tough, let's help them out with a little free advertising via a spotlight in future emails. (Also, we all enjoy reading their stories.)

🌽 Scarecrow Festival
Ashton Gardens is scarecrow central as of TODAY. This event runs until Oct. 19th. The scarecrows on display have been submitted by the community. But there’s more than just scarecrows, there’s food, vendors, and activities. The Scarecrow Festival is included in the regular garden ticket (cheaper if you buy online), and it is free for Thanksgiving Point members.

🏹 Cultural FHE - Tribe of Many Feathers
There’s going to be frybead, performances, crafts and artwork. This is a collaborative event presented by BYU's Tribes of Many Feathers and the Museum of Peoples and Cultures.

👉️ The Orem Library is having a “pay what you can” sale.

Tuesday

🌳 The Tree of Life
You may have already heard about the newest sculpture garden at Thanksgiving Point. Called The Tree of Life, it opens to the public for the first time Tuesday, and it portrays Lehi’s Vision from The Book of Mormon. The exhibit has been set in a quiet part of the garden and features over one hundred bronze figures. “It’s a soul-touching exhibit and an unforgettable experience for the entire family.”

🎉 Ribbon Cutting and Block Party
Main Street in Payson has been under construction for months—but not anymore! Payson celebrated the new and improved downtown on Labor day, but one celebration is never enough! So let’s do it again, there’s going to be a parade, games, and a car show.

🎸🥓 The Bacon Brothers
They say everyone in the world is only 6 degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. Well, we can all get way closer than that this Thursday. This event, which is apparently free, is going to be a popular one—we’ll get you more details in the Wednesday edition.

🏈 BYU Football vs Oklahoma State in Provo
It’s a Friday game this week—plan accordingly! Also, it’s another night game and LES is going to be wild! 🤘🤪🔥 We hope you can get a ticket, we hope Jake throws dimes, we hope the other Jake (Jakob Robinson) gets some interceptions, and we hope Kalani dances the night away!

🍭🚒 University Mall Truck-or-Treat
This is a Halloween costume party plus trunk-or-treat! Orem City is going to have “all the vehicles that keep Orem rolling” there for the kids to enjoy. But just one note: It sounds like the vehicles will not be handing out candy. (Do you really want candy from an Orem City garbage truck? No…wait, actually, yes, if it’s Reese’s.)

There appears to be at least two things on the agenda. One is "an appropriation of $200,000 in the Legacy CIP fund to help pay for Fire Station I construction costs.” The other is “an appropriation of $214,600 in the Tax Increment fund to help fund affordable senior housing projects.”
