What’s Up Provo! Happy Memorial Day! 🇺🇸

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, because it was the day set aside to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. It eventually became a day to honor all fallen soldiers, regardless of war, and in 1971 it became an official federal holiday.

CharityVision

80% blindness can be cured with $25

Hard to imagine a person can go from blind to seeing again with a procedure that costs only $25! Here’s how it works:

🥼 First, CharityVision works with local doctors in more than 20 countries around the world. These doctors are eager to do the charity work for their own people — they just need the supplies to do it!

👁 These doctors are provided with surgical kits CharityVision has developed ($25 or less per surgery), and the miracles start to happen.

“We’re not teaching a man to fish. In fact, they know how to fish, in their pond, better than I do. What we are doing is giving them better bait, a better rod, so they can be more effective.”

Dr. William Jackson (Founder) referring to the local doctors

A million patients screened and well over 100,000 surgeries performed each year, and there’s still a lot of work left to do. Learn more about what they do (both abroad and locally — they’re based right here in Provo!)

Also, check out their moving bar chart graph thing 📊
Kinda hard to explain — it shows their impact over time. Fun to watch and impressive.

🌾 Orem Residents Rally to overturn Wilkerson Farm decision
The City Council voted 4-3 to rezone Wilkerson Farm for single-family housing. But a group of residents have now filed a referendum to overturn the decision and keep the farm open. They need around 7,500 signatures to get it on the November ballot. (From what we know, they will start gathering signatures soon.) Related article

“I’m not trying to… tell you not to have your hotdogs and your burgers. But give them at least a couple minutes. Give them some silence. Say a little prayer. Give them a nod. There’s a bunch of families out there that don’t have loved ones.”
