What's Happening in Provo | October 25th, 2024

What’s Up Provo! The stars have aligned and it’s World Pasta Day and National Breadstick Day! It’s also National Greasy Food Day… Might as well call it Diet Wrecking Day.

A few highlights of today’s newsletter:

  • Dia De Los Muertos (Tres Eventos) 💀🎉 | 🔦 Halloween Spooktacular | Utah’s Largest Halloween Party | 🐩 Puppy Halloween | Utah Valley Monster Concert

  • Spotlight: Voltage Rentals ⚡️

  • Friday Fun: Provo Canyon trails and parks 🏞️

Local Business Highlight: Voltage Rentals ⚡️

If you’re like us, you’ve seen Voltage Rentals renting out eBikes at the mouth of Provo Canyon for the last few years.

We love eBikes, so we reached out to Rehl, the owner of Voltage Rentals to learn more about the company. Here’s the brief story about how it got started:

Rehl and her husband Cameron, both Alpine natives, started Voltage Rentals in 2021. Cameron loves back country skiing, Rehl loves horses, and they both love the outdoors.

Cameron had the idea to rent out eBikes for people to explore and enjoy beautiful Provo Canyon. So they went for it! They grabbed a spot right at the mouth of Provo Canyon and set up shop.

Voltage is now in its 3rd season. They have 20 bikes and 2 electric scooters, and, as we mentioned above, they’re located at the entrance of the Provo River bike path. One thing we like about it is there is no need to cross any roads once you’ve rented your bike. Just park, grab an eBike, get on the trail, and go!

Their hours are 9am-7pm, and they operate from May to October. (Hours vary by season. Also, they close for the season Oct. 31st, so don’t miss your chance!)

If you want to take kids just know that eBikes are for riders 5’1” and taller. However, Voltages rents out both eScooters and attachable bike trailers as well.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. We’ll always let you know if something is sponsored.

Día De Los Muertos (Tres Eventos) 💀🎉

It’s the ultimate family reunion!

The spirits from the other side are on their way—and they come in peace (and in fancy clothes). Apparently, they will be headed to a number of spots around the valley. Here’s where you can celebrate their arrival today and tomorrow:

Today, Pleasant Grove is putting on a Día De Los Muertos Family Festival and they’ve made a promise to give out tons of candy to whoever attends! It will be a night of tradition, dancing, games—so go loco! Just don’t forget to contribute to the community ofrenda.
Friday @ 6pm - 8pm | 547 S Locust Ave, Pleasant Grove | More info

Then on Saturday, follow the smell of Marigolds, and freshly baked pan de Muertos to the Show Barn at Thanksgiving Point.

There will be performances throughout the day, Danza Azteca Quetzalcoatl, Ballet Folkloric Eck & Viva Chile, Ballet de las Americas & Viva Mexico Ballet, and more. Mariachi bands will be playing throughout ("Aaaayyyyeeee!!!"). There’s going to be a Catrina contest. Skeletons and skulls will be appearing everywhere. Also storytellers, art, and amazing food!
Saturday from 10am - 8pm | Thanksgiving Point Show Barn | More info

Also on Saturday, the Provo Library is having a Día de Muertos celebration. So if you don’t want to travel too far, then put on your brightest colors, and some skull makeup, and ven a la biblioteca!

🔦 Halloween Spooktacular
Lindon City put the trick and treat together this year. There’s candy, but they hid (almost) all of it. And the search doesn’t start until after dark—so bring your flashlights! (Phone flashlights might not cut it.) There’s also going to be a trunk-or-treat (cause more candy), “tattoo-ween”, the Haunted Heritage Trail, and some trash pandas... 🗑️🐼 (And by trash pandas we mean the Trash Panda Drum Group.)
Lindon City Center Park (200 N State Street, Lindon) | 6pm | More info

We mentioned two Día de los Muertos events happening tomorrow but there’s a number of other fun things happening as well:

👻🥁 Paranormal Percussion

This got us thinking about what paranormal things have happened around here. Turns out there’s a Ghost Chair in the Harp Room at BYU, as well as a haunted reading room at the Harold B Lee Library. And between the freeway and Geneva in Orem there are stories of robots hiding in abandoned buildings, a skeleton lady who would hide in farmers’ chicken coops, and two escaped elephants. 🐘🐘 (escaped elephants are no joke)

Anyway, Paranormal Percussion is playing tomorrow at the Covey Center, so go check out this demented drum group as they perform their “rhythmic theatrical production of Halloween-themed songs”!
Covey Center | Shows at 2:30pm & 7:30pm | Tickets

🐩 Puppy Halloween
You know dogs… they love trick-or-treating. So once the Provo Towne Center has cleaned up after the Terror in the Mall, they are inviting everyone and their dog to trick-or-treat, for FREE! So bring your dogs and let them trick-or-treat to their heart’s content. (We’re no vets, but we heard dogs shouldn’t have chocolate.)
Provo Towne Centre | Noon to 4pm | More info

👾🎹 Utah Valley Monster Concert
There’s a monster of a concert happening at University Place, with almost 300 pianist playing in all, and sometimes 24 playing at a time! The concert will be repeated four times (each start on the hour) with different performances.
City Court by Dillard’s | 1pm - 4:30pm | More info

🎽 Provo Haunted Half
Know what would be scary? Running in a half marathon without training for it. Here’s your chance! There’s going to be a pumpkin arch…
333 W River Park Drive | Half: 8:00am, 5K: 8:30am, Kid's Run: 11:00am | Register

💉 Dermatology Tricks and Treats
Deseret Dermatology is a great practice—and you have to love them for putting on a Halloween-themed event. They’re going to have food and treats and raffles, and 50% off Laser Hair Removal! In all honesty, that’s a very generous treat.
1593 N Redwood Rd, Saratoga Springs | 10am - 2pm | More info

Also:
👉️ Don’t forget about Bach in the Library at 2pm
👉️ There’s another Doggy Trunk or Treat at C-A-L Ranch
👉️ Big event at the Provo Rec Center: Intergalalctic Halloween Carnival
👉️ UVU vs BYU men’s soccer match at 7pm (FREE)
👉️ Halloween Dance Party by Gio Dance World (for preschool and elementary aged kids)
👉️ BYU Football takes it’s win streak to Florida as it faces UCF at 1:30pm MT - Go Cougs!
👉️ And it’s last day of Octubafest

(That’s a lot of events we just rattled off there, and for only two days! Let us know if you think it’s too much…)

🚲️ Friday Fun

The weather is looking great this weekend, and not so much next week, so we’re feeling the urgency to get out and enjoy it.

We’ve got Provo Canyon right next door to us, but we know not everyone is familiar with all it has to offer. We don’t have the time or space to talk about all of it but hopefully this list is a good start:

Provo River Trail

Shout out to Voltage Rentals again for the amazing picture above. The Provo River Trail is gorgeous. Whatever stretch you find yourself on, you are guaranteed some great views.

Mt. Timpanogos Park

This park has manicured lawns, amazing trees (with colors still popping!), and is so peaceful. It was originally built to hold the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, so it has a good amount of space and a lot of different pavilions you can use—perfect for a picnic, a game of kickball, whatever.

And right next to it is the Orem Bike Skills Park. They’ve got green to black diamond runs, and even a beginner friendly pump track loop (I think they call it the “Bike Skills Playground”).

To give you a reference point, the parking lot at the bottom of this image is also the parking lot for Mt. Timpanogos Park.

South Fork

Maybe the best spot in Provo Canyon. If you don’t know it already, there’s lots of lawn space to spread out and enjoy the amazing views. The little stream that runs through is perfect for exploring and playing, especially in the summer. Go up a little farther on the road to Big Springs and hike the loop.

Thanks!

Enjoy the weekend! 😉

p.s.s. Corrections: We said that Paranormal Percussion was playing at The Boardwalk last time. That is not correct of course, they are playing at the Covey Center. Sorry for the confusion.
