WHAT’S UP

Utah Lake Sauna Grand Opening
This week marked the grand opening of the Utah Lake Sauna! Its’s a new concession being offered by state parks in Utah (Utah is the first in the United States to add saunas to their State Parks by the way), and the third one they have opened so far. (There are two others, one in Willard Bay and a Wasatch Mountain sauna as well.)

Here’s a little from their website: “Our lakeside sauna offers the perfect retreat. Our communal sauna includes a privacy / changing room for your bags and towels, a hot room with comfortable seating for up to eight, an outdoor shower, cold plunge, and space with nearby seating for your cool down.”

(If you want to try it out you can get 10% off with discount code whatsup10)

🔔 Volunteers Needed at The Salvation Army Provo
The Salvation Army in Provo is looking for volunteers this weekend (Dec 19–20) to help with its Red Kettle bell-ringing campaign. Shifts are about two hours, and they welcome carolers and folks in festive outfits!
You all know the bell-ringing holiday tradition — but did you know how they use the funds? First off, all donations stay local and they support the assistance they give the rest of the year, such as transportation help, gas cards, vehicle repairs, bus/greyhound tickets, and emergency disaster care for Utah County residents.

🚧 Provo Canyon Closures This Week for Highway Blasting
If you’re planning to head through Provo Canyon in the next few days, you’ll want to plan ahead. UDOT has announced temporary closures on US-189 as crews continue work to widen the highway near Deer Creek Reservoir. The biggest impact is hopefully behind us (they closed the road for about an hour yesterday). But additional work will happen Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

💎 Major mineral discovery in Utah County
“Our machine came back showing, in every single sample that we looked at, the same distribution of these metals. We first thought … maybe there’s a mistake.”

A major mineral discovery just west of Utah Lake is putting a spotlight on Utah and the role it could play in the future of advanced technology and manufacturing. Provo-based company, Ionic Mineral Technologies, has confirmed a large deposit of critical and rare earth minerals at its Silicon Ridge site in Utah County. These minerals are essential for everything from electric vehicles and semiconductors to renewable energy tech and defense systems. What makes this find especially noteworthy is that the minerals occur in clay rather than hard rock, meaning they could be easier and cleaner to extract, potentially with very low waste and without explosives or harsh chemicals, according to the company.
