WHAT’S UP

🏡 New community coming to Utah
A new, $600 million, 325-acre master-planned community named Echo (…echo…echo….) is coming to Erda in Tooele County. It’s going to be developed by Cole West, will have around 1,260 homes (single-family + townhomes) and construction will start in 2026. The prediction is that Tooele County could hit about 100,000 residents by 2033 — do we need a What’s Up Tooele?

📦 Pantry Closure in Springville
Community Action Services & Food Bank (CASFB) is closing its Springville pantry location at the Kiwanis Club of Springville-run site due to a space-repurposing situation — the facility being used is being taken back by its landlord. 🍪 Crumbl covering the fee
The fans stormed the field, as you probably know, and that means a fine from the BIG 12, but Crumbl Cookies CEO Jason McGowan said he will personally pay the penalty.

WHAT ELSE

Local Spotlight
Truth and Treason 📽

Locally-made, and based on a true and amazing story, Truth and Treason hit NATIONAL theaters last Friday.

A Utah-made story: This isn’t just a historical drama—it’s a hometown production with heart. Matt Whitaker, a filmmaker who spent 32 years in Orem and graduated from BYU’s film program, wrote, directed, and produced Truth & Treason alongside Provo’s own Kaleidoscope Pictures. With Russ Kendall and John Foss as fellow producers and distribution by Angel Studios, this powerful indie has made its way to theaters nationwide!

Inspiring true story: At the heart of it all is Helmuth Hübener, a 16-year-old from Hamburg, Germany, who stood up to the Nazi regime. The start of Helmuth’s defiance began when his Jewish friend disappeared which led him to start listening to banned radio broadcasts. We’ll let the film tell the rest of the story, which it does with great emotion (and great acting).

Behind the scenes: After meeting Karl-Heinz Schnibbe in 2001—the last surviving member of Helmuth’s resistance group—Matt Whitaker was inspired to make a documentary called Truth & Conviction. But the story wouldn’t let him go. By 2002, he began writing a feature-length script, turning it into a 23-year journey to the big screen. The movie was filmed over 10 weeks in 2024 in Lithuania, and it has a talented all-British cast.

Powerful details: Matt Whitaker and co-writer Ethan Vincent (also a Provo native) incorporated the actual words from the 29 unique anti-Nazi flyers Helmuth distributed—each translated into English and woven throughout the film. Academy Award-winning producer Gerald Molen (Schindler’s List) called the script “a masterpiece,” saying it moved him to “a sense of pride, country, honor, duty, and tears.”
