In Partnership with Desert Willow Tree Care
Tree Care Do’s and Don’ts (Fall edition)

Some advice from Scott @ Desert Willow Tree Care:
If you’ve been eyeing the yard thinking, ‘time to prune”, hit pause—you might do more damage than good.
Fall is often the worst time for pruning
As trees begin the slow process of going dormant for winter, pruning can actually confuse them. Pruning cuts send a signal to grow—and that new growth keeps the tree “awake” when it should be shutting down and preparing for a long winter's nap. This leaves your tree vulnerable when freezing temperatures hit.
So what tree care should you do in the Fall?
If you’ve got a tree with dead, diseased, or dangerous branches—the three D’s—those need attention now. Especially dangerous limbs. One storm is all it takes to bring a weak branch crashing down on your roof, fence, or car. Don't wait for winter to expose the problem.
BUT… if you’re thinking about removing a tree, Fall is the perfect time 🍂
Skip the hassle of raking—by having your tree professionally removed, not only does your tree get hauled away but the leaves are also cleaned up and taken with it! Or get rid of a risky tree before snow and ice make the job harder (and more urgent).

WHAT’S UP

❄️ First Snow
The mountains just got their first taste of winter in late September. Apparently the first flakes began falling near 10,715′ Bald Mountain Pass in the Uintas along Mirror Lake Highway. Brighton Resort also picked up its first snow of the season as well. Looking ahead, some signals are saying to expect a warmer and drier winter, but the Old Farmers Almanac says to expect a “mild and wet” winter. 🤷♂
🏀 Jimmer's new podcast with AJ
To all you non-BYU sports fans, feel free to 🙄 at this one. To everyone else, you might already know that Jimmer has started a new podcast called From the Logo with Jimmer Fredette. In the last episode, he talked with hopeful future star AJ Dybantsa.
(By the way, look for the BYU Basketball event coming up in the What’s Coming section.)
🌉 University Ave. bridge construction starts
Starting this week, crews have begun work to reconstruct the “viaduct” between 920 South and 400 South over the FrontRunner line in Provo. Traffic impacts are delayed until later in October, and during construction at least one lane in each direction will remain open. The rebuilt bridge will bring:
2 travel lanes each way, 6‑ft bike lanes, 8‑ft sidewalks, a 12‑ft multiuse trail, and a 10‑ft protective fence over tracks

WHAT’S HAPPENING
Today & Tomorrow

🏈 BYU vs. West Virginia Football
The new LES Gameday website is so nice to have. (Maybe it’s not actually that new, but it’s new to us.)
Anyway here’s a summary of what you’ll find on that page that explains the gameday activities happening today:
(if you want to go to it yourself, click the blue header link for this event summary)
Pre-game activities
The game day experience begins well before kickoff with Cougar Canyon (including The Backyard at Cougar Canyon), which opens 3½ hours before kickoff (so around 5:00 pm). It will stay open until roughly 30 minutes before kickoff so fans still have time to make their way into the stadium. There will be:
Autograph signings by BYU athletes and coaches
Inflatables, face painting, caricature artists, axe throwing (inflatable axes we believe) and more games
Live music / DJs
There’s a big LED video board showing game highlights, upcoming events, and college football games
Photo opportunities with former Cougar greats and prized trophies (e.g. National Championship Trophy, Heisman, Davey O’Brien, etc.)
Local food trucks (Bandera Brisket, Good Grindz, Jurassic Tacos, JDawgs)
Merchandise booths selling BYU apparel & gear
And around 2½ hours before kickoff, the Cougar Walk takes place through Cougar Canyon.
In summary here are the (estimated) times for everything:
5:00 pm — Cougar Canyon opens
6:00 pm — Cougar Walk begins, players & coaches enter stadium through Canyon
6:30 pm — Stadium gates open
8:30 pm — Kickoff
LaVell Edwards Stadium, Provo | Fri, Oct 3 | 8:30pm kickoff

The Donut Run 🍩

“We Donut Cut Corners”
From cowboy roots to Utah favorite: It all started when a local company, SumBrands, took over Cowboy Donuts in 2017. Right away they leaned into what made the shop special — made-from-scratch donuts and kolaches, baked every morning, no shortcuts. In fact, their motto is: “We Donut Cut Corners"
Back to basics—with heart: The Donut Run focuses on simply making high quality donuts, and that’s exactly why people love it. Inspired by childhood memories and old-school donut shops, they’re all about keeping things nostalgic. Classic glazed, chocolate cake, kolaches, dinner rolls — all handmade with care.

They have four locations total, two in Utah County: 102 NW State St in American Fork, and 1306 E Center St in Spanish Fork.
