WHAT’S UP
🔥 Cherry Fire in Hobble Creek
With all the rain and the cool weather we assumed this wasn’t a thing anymore, but obviously we don’t understand enough about wildfires. Anyway, last we saw, the fire in Hobble Creek Canyon (which was human caused) is just 15% contained. Recent rains have probably helped, but they’ve also made things a little more difficult as well. For now, they’ve asked that we all stay clear of the Right Hand Fork road in Hobble Creek Canyon.
✈️ BYU’s New NIL Idea
BYU announced that they are teaming up with Waypoint (which was co‑founded by a BYU alumni Matt Sanders). Sanders figures BYU alumni spend ~$3.5 billion annually on travel, and so the idea is that every time fans book through their new site dedicated to cougar fans, GoCougs.travel, 50% of the net revenue goes to the BYU athletic department. So if you’re wondering if you should travel more, do it! It’s for a good cause.
🏀 KJ Perry Commits to BYU Basketball
More BYU news, the top JUCO guard KJ Perry (6’2″, ~165 lbs) has decided to play at BYU, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. He’ll join the Cougars midyear but redshirt the 2025–26 season — he’s expected to begin playing in 2026–27.

Spotlight
Epic SchoolKids 🎿

Credit: Park City Mountain Resort
Free to ski: If you’ve got a kid in grades K–5, here’s something epic: your child can ski or snowboard for free at Park City Mountain. Thanks to the Epic SchoolKids Utah Pack, local families can introduce their kids to the slopes without the usual cost. The program includes five free days on the mountain—and you don’t need to buy anything else to qualify.
How it works: The pass is open to all Utah residents with kids in kindergarten through 5th grade. It comes with five days of skiing or snowboarding at Park City (blackout dates apply, as always), plus a one-time free beginner lesson and rental package for kids who are first-timers. (They really do have to be first-timers.)
Registration happens online, and there’s an in-person verification at a local ski shop (you’ll bring a few documents like proof of school enrollment and your child’s age). Once it’s set up, returning kids can reuse their pass card from last year. This year’s deadline is October 8—wait that’s tomorrow!

Trivia Answer 🤓
In case you missed it, here’s the trivia question we put in the BYU Bean Museum Fall Trivia Night event writeup:
Question: What root vegetable was traditionally used to carve Jack-O-Lanterns?
Options: a) Turnip b) Jicama c) Sweet Potato d) onions (see the answer at the bottom of the email)
Answer: Turnip
In Ireland they would carve turnips before coming to America and decided to use pumpkins instead since they were so much bigger and readily available.
