What’s Up Provo! Happy National Meow Like a Pirate Day! 😼🏴‍☠

We tried, it sounded weird.

In Partnership with
Walk 4 Hope

Check out the Walk4Hope. It’s a great event (event promotes suicide prevention and awareness), a great cause, it is free to the public, and it includes a continental breakfast, free t-shirts, and a dove release.

Also, everyone is invited to bring a photo of a loved one lost to suicide for the memory wall.

On-site mental health providers will be there (and a pipe band, too), and there will be a short program by child psychiatrist Dr. Matt Swenson.

And, of course, there will be a walk!

WHAT’S UP

Credit: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

There are going to be “significant” changes coming to the MTC soon. Final plans include tearing down the existing cafeteria and administration buildings and replacing them with two new structures. From what we’ve read, the campus will remain fully operational throughout the multiyear construction, (so no housing missionaries around the city like they did some years ago).

UTA and UDOT are teaming up to extend the FrontRunner’s double track about 0.7 miles south from the Provo Station.

The project, part of a larger 11-location expansion, will require demolishing 16 units in the Mountain View Condominiums at 623 S 500 W, plus one private property. (This section of the 11-location expansion is supposedly the only spot requiring residential demolition.)

Construction is slated for 2026 to 2029, though exact move-out dates for affected residents haven’t been set.

The stats and odds makers are giving BYU the edge tomorrow—which doesn’t mean much but it’s nice to know. They're favored by 6.5, with analytics giving them a 70–80% chance to win.

BYU’s defense looks elite so far, in fact they are #1 nationally in points allowed per drive. But ECU brings a dangerous passing game, averaging 346 yards through the air. So we’re interested to see what that matchup looks like.

Also, you might be surprised to know that BYU has done well creating “quality drives.” The problem is getting points off those drives. They’re ranked about 110th nationally in points per quality drive according to the SI article (see the link).

WHAT’S HAPPENING

Today & Tomorrow

Festivals

We have vague memories of Riverwoods in Provo doing something like this years ago and we loved it. (bring it back Riverwoods!)

Anyway, this is the first ever Taste of Orem Festival, so if you’re confused how it works, that’s understandable. Here’s what we know:

A bunch of Orem restaurants will be there giving out samples of their food (check out their Taste of Orem Menu if you want to see which ones).

You get the samples by purchasing them with tickets. Samples will probably be much more than just a little-white-paper-cup-costco-sample. Each will cost 1-5 tickets, and you buy the tickets in bulk.

There’s also a lot of other stuff going on, concerts, vendors. The kick-off concert is tonight, and the Food Festival starts tomorrow at noon.

WHAT ELSE

Local Spotlight
Baking Me Crazy 🍪

From cookies to baking supplies & from Texas to Utah: Karen Teuscher’s journey started with a single cookie class in Texas. After falling in love with decorating, she began selling themed cookie sets to friends—turning a hobby into a home business. But in the middle of it all she moved here to Utah. She tried starting up the same business here, but having to drive all the way to Salt Lake for the right baking supplies was no fun!

She told her husband, "Someone should open a baking supply shop in Utah County". Then the thought came to her, "maybe that someone should be me!" In 2023, she opened Baking Me Crazy at The Shops at Riverwoods. She also added a studio space for hosting classes just like the one that inspired her years ago.

More than just a store: Yes, you can find cookie cutters, food gels, cake pans, piping tips, Guittard chocolate, and Peter’s caramel—but that’s just the beginning. As mentioned, the studio hosts a rotating calendar of classes taught by local bakers: sourdough, macarons, cookies, cake pops, and more. (You've probably seen the classes mentioned in this newsletter.) They rent the space for private events and birthday parties, too. One of their more popular events is the Drop‑n‑Decorate on Friday nights, where you can grab a cookie kit (for $25, $20 if you purchase online), some sprinkles, and frosting, and enjoy a low‑key night out.

What’s next: The shop has expanded to include online ordering for in-store pickup or delivery, and their sourdough section keeps growing. Karen and her team are always trying new things based on customer feedback—and they love seeing the creativity people bring in. Keep an eye out for upcoming seasonal kits, new classes, and more collaborations with local bakers!
