Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

We ran into a story about Milton Hershey recently, and considering today is chocolate pecan pie day it felt right to share it.

The Legacy of Milton Hershey: A Sweet Success Story

Milton Hershey, the name synonymous with chocolate in America, was a pioneer in more than just sweet treats. Born in 1857, Hershey’s journey to success was a testament to perseverance. Like many iconic entrepreneurs, his path wasn’t easy. At just 18, he opened his first candy business, which closed after six years. Undeterred, Hershey pivoted to learning the art of caramel making, launching ventures in Chicago and New York—both of which ultimately failed.

However, Hershey’s persistence paid off when he returned to Pennsylvania and founded the Lancaster Caramel Company. Finally tasting success, he didn’t settle. At the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Hershey discovered the rich, creamy Swiss milk chocolate, which inspired his next venture. He was convinced that chocolate was the future of candy in America. After learning the secrets of Swiss chocolatiers, he sold his caramel company in 1900 for $1 million (nearly $30 million in today’s money) to focus on chocolate production.

Soon after the Hershey Bar was born, followed by the iconic Hershey’s Kisses. His products revolutionized chocolate in the U.S. by making it affordable for everyone. But Hershey’s legacy extended beyond candy. He built a thriving community around his factory in what is now Hershey, Pennsylvania, offering homes, parks, and schools for workers and their families. Hershey and his wife, who couldn’t have children, dedicated much of their wealth to programs for kids, including establishing a trust that still funds the Milton Hershey School and other initiatives.

Hershey’s legacy is one of resilience, innovation, and generosity—a sweet combination that continues to inspire.
