Collisions and BYU vs BYU šŸš—šŸ”§

Classic Rock Festival, Demolition Derby, Provo Rec Center Party, BYU Women's Soccer

Whatā€™s Up Provo!ā›°ļø

Happy Campfire Day.šŸ”„ I donā€™t know if we should celebrate it though... On second thought, letā€™s avoid campfires today. And hey, no need for campfires, so many other things going on!

Of course thereā€™s always the Provo Farmerā€™s Market, can't go wrong there. And thereā€™s also the Utah County Fair! Plus other cities are doing their city day thing, BYU sports are starting up--in a way (we'll explain).

Whatā€™s Happening

Hereā€™s a quick overview of todayā€™s top events:

Onoā€™s Malasadas

Some text.

End of Summer Reading Pool PartyšŸ’¦šŸ“•

Provo Rec Outdoor Pool from 10:00am to 11:30am

This exclusive party is actually being put on by the Provo City Library. If you finished the summer reading program let the library know so you can get a ticket!

Just remember, if you do go, it's a library event, so keep the volume down. If you must talk, please whisper.šŸ¤«

No just kidding, normal library rules don't apply at a library pool party! So take advantage and speak as loud as you can! Hit the slides with your favorite librarian! šŸ¤Ŗ It should be a great time. Once again, it starts at 10am and goes until 11:30am.

Provo Farmerā€™s MarketšŸ‘©ā€šŸŒ¾

Pioneer park from 9am to 2pm

The Provo Farmer's Market holds a special place in our hearts here at What's Up Provo. Thatā€™s where we had the best cup of hot chocolate ever.

Alsoā€¦

If you are doing yard work in the morning and you haven't laid down your Step 3, it's probably time to do that. šŸŒ±

They recommend to spread Step 4 over your lawn by labor day, which is on Mon, Sep 2nd.

You are supposed to space out the times you spread the different "steps". (If you spread Step 3 on Aug 21st or something and then you spread Step4 on Sept 1st that might not be enough time between steps.)

If you don't know what we're talking about, Scott's has a four step lawn care program that a lot of people follow.

Classic Rock FestivalšŸŽøšŸ”„šŸ¤˜

Utah County Fairgrounds from 1pm to 7pm+

Robert Anthony Plant and James Patrick Page

When I hear ā€œcounty fairā€ I think about Charlotteā€™s Web. What I should think is rock concerts and demolition derbies.

The demolition derby is happening tonight (next section), but the Classic Rock Festival is starting this afternoon.

First band (Monkey Friday) starts at 1pm, next band is at 2:30, then 4:00, 5:30 and finally 7pm.

Additionally, there are a number of events happening in Highland and Heber (city days) all afternoon.

Highland Fling

Quick-ish Tip

This comes from a book by Cal Newport weā€™ve been reading recently, Deep Work. In the book Cal explains why constantly switching between the real world and our phones, or email, the internet etc. are having an effect on our brains.šŸ“±šŸ§

In the book Cal references a researcher Clifford Nass, a Stanford communications professor who studied behavior in the digital age:

ā€œPeople who multitask all the time canā€™t filter out irrelevancy. They canā€™t manage a working memory. Theyā€™re chronically distracted. They initiate much larger parts of their brain that are irrelevant to the task at handā€¦ theyā€™re pretty much mental wrecks.ā€

- Clifford Nass

Cal argues that constantly checking notifications, pulling out a device whenever weā€™re bored is a type of multi tasking and his advice is to schedule time to be ā€œdistractedā€. (Distracted in this case also includes checking texts, emails, looking up something onlineā€”not how we normally define distracted.)

The rest of the time, focus on your focus.

So the tip/challenge is: Schedule time blocks during which youā€™re allowed to use the internet

The rest of the time, focus on your work, your family, and the real world.

If you are working on something that requires the internet, resist. Make progress without using the internet, then in your next internet time block.

If you really need to use the internet for something, and your next scheduled internet/phone time block isnā€™t for another 20 minutes, at least wait 5 to 10 minutes. That way the urge is separated from the action.

BYU Womenā€™s Soccerāš½

South Field @ 7pm

In Provo tonight, BYU Women's Soccer is having a blue and white game.

Blue and White games are usually free. (If you don't know what a blue and white game is, it is when the team plays itself, it's a good way for them to get ready for the season and a great time for the fans to get to see them.)

You have to love South Field under the lights. Go BYU! Beat BYU!

Demolition DerbyšŸš˜

Spanish Fork Fairgrounds Arena @ 7pm

Thereā€™s been a lot of excitement around this event, tickets have gone quickly. (Fortunately, last we checked tickets there were some tickets still available. Tickets cost around $25.)

Also, donā€™t forget about the Classic Rock Festival-- artists are going to be playing all evening, last one starts at 7pm. Thereā€™s also plenty of vendor booths and food trucks to visit.

Downtown

Center Street and University are always fun on a warm Saturday night.

The Provo Art Stroll happened yesterday, but you can still grab something to eat stroll Center Street. Also, Improv Broadway is having their improvised musical comedy show.

Highland Fling and Wasatch County Fair

Itā€™s the last day for Highland's and Heber's (Wasatch county) celebrations.

So if you opt out of watching crashing cars at the demolition derby you can go crash the parties at Heber or Highland. (Outdoor concert in Highland at 8pm, also fireworks in Highland and the Light Up The Sky Balloon Launch in Heber, both at 10pm.)

Live Music

@ The Rise
Black Tie Event w Health Care

@ The Boardwalk
Soul Dye, Sunnies and Venus Death Trap

@ The Sundance Owl Bar
Complimentary live music from Matthew & The Hope

Also, donā€™t forget the Classic Rock Festival at the Utah County Fair, and the Outdoor Concert in Highland (Highland Fling event).
