What’s Up Provo!

Happy National Toilet Paper Day! 🧻

Fun fact about toilet paper: the ancient Romans didn’t have any. They instead used a sea sponge on a stick after using the restroom. After using it they would simply rinse it off and leave it for the next person. 🤨

Let’s not think about that anymore. Here are the top events for the day:

Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

SATURDAY BYU Ties Long Beach State

BYU scored first but Long Beach State tied it up soon after. Recap

Motivation Monday

It’s Mother Teresa’s birthday this week, but do you know her story?

Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997)

Born in Skopje, in present-day North Macedonia, and named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu at birth, Mother Teresa was deeply influenced by her family and her faith from an early age. After experiencing a profound desire to serve as a missionary, she joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland at age 18 and took the name Sister Mary Teresa. Her journey led her to India, where she taught in a convent school for nearly two decades. However, her life’s mission took a dramatic turn during a train journey in 1946:

“On 10 September 1946 during the train ride from Calcutta to Darjeeling for her annual retreat, Mother Teresa received her “inspiration”, her “call within a call.”... Over the course of the next weeks and months, by means of interior locutions and visions, Jesus revealed to her the desire of His heart… He asked Mother Teresa to establish a religious community, Missionaries of Charity, dedicated to the service of the poorest of the poor. Nearly two years of testing and discernment passed before Mother Teresa received permission to begin. On August 17, 1948, she dressed for the first time in a white, blue-bordered sari and passed through the gates of her beloved Loreto convent to enter the world of the poor.’

‘On 21 December she went for the first time to the slums. She visited families, washed the sores of some children, cared for an old man lying sick on the road and nursed a woman dying of hunger and TB. She started each day in communion with Jesus in the Eucharist and then went out, rosary in her hand, to find and serve Him in “the unwanted, the unloved, the uncared for.” After some months, she was joined, one by one, by her former students.”

Mother Teresa and her sisters dedicated themselves to the most marginalized, caring for the sick, hungry, and homeless in the slums of Calcutta and beyond. What began as a small effort in Calcutta grew into a global mission, with her order expanding to serve in over 120 countries by the time of her death.

Mother Teresa’s purpose in life was not just shaped by the external service she provided but also by her deep interior struggles. Despite facing profound spiritual darkness and a sense of separation from God—a trial she referred to as "the darkness"—she remained committed to her mission. Her perseverance and humility, even in the face of this inner suffering, made her work all the more remarkable.

Her unwavering faith and dedication attracted worldwide recognition, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, yet she remained focused on her calling, always emphasizing the simple acts of love and kindness. Even as her health declined in later years, she continued to guide her order and respond to the needs of the poor until her passing in 1997. Mother Teresa’s legacy endures as a beacon of compassion and selfless service, inspiring countless people to live with a spirit of love and care for others, especially the most vulnerable.
