It’s National Rice Pudding Day. So grab your favorite spoon and let’s get going! It’s Friday, so there are a ton of things going on.

Top events this weekend:

Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

BYU Film Series: 2001: A Space Odyssey 🤖

Harold B Lee Library (Reynolds Auditorium) @ 7pm

A lot of similarities between HAL 9000 and ChatGPT…

As fans of classic movies the BYU Film Series is one of our favorites. The BYU Library Film Series wraps up its summer celebration of science fiction with a screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

This is such a groundbreaking film, and strangely relevant considering the recent proliferation of AI tools and products.

HAL (Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computer) is a sentient artificial general intelligence computer that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with the ship's astronaut crew.

BYU Women’s Soccer vs Wyoming ⚽

South Field @ 7pm

The BYU Women’s Soccer team is looking for another preseason win, this time against another rival (kind of) Wyoming. It should be a great game as BYU practices beating cowboys before they head into the regular season where they’ll have to beat more cowboys. 🐮

So, Go Cougs! Go Jen! Game starts at 7pm and will be broadcast on BYUTV (specifically on the BYUTV app) and ESPN+.

🎬 Outdoor Movie Night: Star Wars: Episode 1
The Orchard (Universite Place) @ 8:30pm
It’s the last Outdoor Movie event this year for University Place. So bring your blankets and chairs and get some free popcorn (while supplies last). They will also have free face painting and Quench It! soda’s and Kona Ice for sale.

Tip for the day

It’s national Simplify Your Life week. Marie Kondo would like you to declutter your closet.

Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy.

There is a lot to the ways of Marie Kondo. Here is a quick quote from her first rule to tidying up (which is “Commit Yourself to Tidying Up”):

“Setting the intention to seriously tidy up – and resolving to put in the time and effort required – is the first rule of tidying. When you approach your tidying festival with a clear vision and a can-do attitude, you’ll find the energy and motivation you need to tidy all of your belongings in one go.

The effort will be worth it in the end. Not only will you experience the joy of living with objects you love, but you’ll also be on the path to establishing your ideal lifestyle.”
