What’s Up Provo! ⛰️

It’s Hug a Greeting Card Writer Day today. 🤗

We do find it a little hard to celebrate this holiday. If you can’t find a greeting card writer today, try hugging a greeting card reader instead.

Here are the top events today:

  • 🏐 BYU Women’s Volleyball vs Utah State

  • 🌳 Popsicles in the Park

  • 🧒 Learn It: Create Smoother Routines for Children

Ono’s Malasadas

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

⚠️ Correction

In yesterday’s email we said that the constitution was signed over 400 years ago.

Obviously, that is not correct—the Mayflower (which we talked about earlier this week) was over 400 years ago, not the signing of the US Constitution. (We must have had Mayflower Day on our minds still.)

Thanks to our readers who pointed this out!
