Ono’s Malasadas

Ono’s BBQ Burger & Ono’s Kaluha Burger

OUR STORY

While on their annual vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, Sophia Bussio and her family discovered Malasadas, a Portuguese fried sweet dough, a food staple in Hawaii. Sophia and her family saw the opportunity to bring the malasada magic to Provo. Excited to embrace the opportunity, the Bussios dove headfirst into the world of fried dough, later naming their new company “Ono’s Malasadas.”

OUR NAME

The name, a fusion of Hawaiian and Portuguese, encapsulates what a malasada truly is. “Ono” in Hawaiian means “delicious,” while in Portuguese, “Malasadas” translates to “bad dough” — a contradiction that perfectly describes the treat.

👁️ Service Spotlight: CharityVision International

1 in 8 people worldwide suffer needlessly from a visual impairment because they lack access to eye care, and CharityVision, (founded in 1987 and headquartered on Canyon Road in Provo), is doing something about that.
CharityVision website
Watch Asa’s Journey

Some quick stats about CharityVision’s impact around the world: In 2023 CharityVision reported the following: 223 Partners/Clinics Worldwide; 137,501 Total Surgeries; 160,059 Glasses Donated; 1,478,376 Patients Screened.

What makes CharityVision Unique: Through their partners, CharityVision has developed a surgical supply kit for cataracts that brings the cost of cataract surgery overseas down from around $300 per eye to $25 per eye.

Also, they believe in a teach a man to fish model. 🎣

Continuing with the analogy, they believe that the local doctors already know how to fish in their own pond better than we do. CharityVision’s job is making sure they have the right equipment, funding, and supplies to support the humanitarian work these local doctors are already eager to do.

How you can help: CharityVision takes glasses donations, they have tons of donated glasses that need to be sorted and organized, and, of course, they would love a donation!
